It is thought that the first rise was into 663 by an anonymous monk. The top was regarded as crowned since l' antiquity and was interdict with the women jusqu' with l' Meiji era. Ancient Samurai used the base of the mountain like a space of remote formation, close to the current city of Gotemba. The shogun Minamoto No Yoritomo yabusame held in the area at the beginning of the Kamakura period.
