Angkor Vat, l' one of the most beautiful historic sites and mysterious in the world. Located at more than 192 miles at the North-West of the Kampuchean capital Phnom Penh, Angkor “was protected” by tourism, and the habits and the cultures of the populations which live n' there; did not change much. However, the intense internal war for more than fifty years has had effects on the people and to a certain extent on the physical structure of the temples d' Angkor. In 1991, the Khmer Rouges, the movement of guerrilla, controlled the area. It was thus very difficult to visit the area, and the only way d' there to arrive was in the helicopter of Phnom Penh. I n' will never forget when I left helicopter, and penetrated in the ground d' history, a ground where Western civilization had forgotten. In this article, I would like to discuss l' history of the large temples of the “lost city” d' Angkor Wat, but I also make a point of describing some of my own observations of l' summer 1991...
During many years, Angkor Wat is completely isolated from the western world. Broad, thick jungle recovers the area, and it is located in the center of Kampuchea. The French colonizers were the first Westerners to have exposed to Angkor. They heard rumours of the local population on " temples built by the gods or géants." Majority of the colonialists returned these rumours for the popular tales, but some thought qu' it n' there was really a " lost city d' an empire of Kampuchea”, which was once powerful and rich. The temples were discovered by French missionaries in 1860. Henri Mahout, a French botanist started intensive research and programs of restoration. These research efforts are continued jusqu' in 1968, when the war of Vietnam disturbed studies. Initially, he does not believe that the temples were built by the Kampuchean ones, but by another race which had contributed, and occupied Kampuchea since more than 2000 years. Its theory will be later revealed to be erroneous, after researchers discovered scripts on the walls of the temples and the stone sculptures, which made it possible to the archaeologists to reconstitute l' history of Kampuchea. Now it is known that Angkor, was the large capital of l' worsen Khmer of the founder of the city towards l' year 880 until about 1225.

The history of Angkor Wat goes back to the kingdom of Insane-nan. This kingdom was created by an Indian Brahman, and in AD200, the country was regulated peacefully by Indian tradesmen. Four hundred years after, the kingdom had become a prosperous commercial area. As the zone was located on the Pilgrim rout between China and l' India, l' hindouism and Chinese Buddhism was adopted by the new colonists. L' influence Indian and Chinese still feels with Kampuchea, and the temples d' Angkor Wat resembles Hindu temples and Buddhists who can be found in the north of l' India and in Nepal. At the end of l' AD600, l' Worsen much lost Funan of its capacity in the kingdom of Chenla. The capital of this new empire, Sambor, was located at approximately 40 miles in South-east d' Angkor. During this time, beautiful sculptures and sculptures out of sandstone was popular. In AD750, a king who with the reputation d' to be a war like anybody, who was in d' measurement; to extend the Chenla kingdom. However, trade with l' India stopped, and l' Worsen indonésien carried with the capacity. In AD800, the kingdom of Kambuja was created, and king Jayavarman J' took again control on the kingdom. It built several capitals close d' Angkor Wat, were responsible for many social changes, and succeeded in posing of size, in North and l' Is. In AD889, a nephew of Jayavaram becomes the new emperor, and it was in d' measurement; to bring peace and l' unit of the Khmer Kingdom. In AD944, Jayavarman V established of many temples of Buddhism mahayana, close d' Angkor, and with the court of Yasodharapura, Angkor. Cultures thrived, and thus in fact with l' Worsen Khmer. In AD1000, Sûryavarman, an young man who May came from the provinces of l' Malayan empire, goes up on the throne of Kambuja. It had been going to become king de Kambuja for more than 50 years. It is responsible for the planning and the foundations of the d' city; Angkor. In AD1051, Udayādityavarman II to make a success of Suryavarman, and continued to build the city d' Angkor, and restored many temples. Angkor is aujourd' today at the same time crowned a temple city and centers it d' a vast system d' irrigation.

A massive expansion of the city continued throughout the 200 next years, and the ambitious schedules construction increases the city. Many temples were built. The temples are distributed on approximately 40 miles around the village of Siem Reap. Temples and of the structures similar to temples that l' one finds in the d' city; Angkor, are attractions current in Thailand, in Laos, in Vietnam and in China. Perhaps the most famous temple, Angkor Wat, are a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnou was built during this period. Angkor Wat is most of l' structure of Khmer temple, and is aujourd' today the “headlight” of the temples d' Angkor. The temple is an enormous pyramidal structure. The compound with Angkor Wat s' extends on a surface of 1500 by 1300 m (4920 by 4265 feet) and is surrounded d' an immense ditch 180 m (590 pi) broad. Length of the roadway leading to the door d' enormous entry balustrades are in the shape of giant snakes, which are supposed to represent the emblems of cosmic fruitfulness. The temple is composed d' a complex of high terraces and the small buildings which are arranged in a series of three stages decreases and surmounted by five turns. The structures of roof and without roof are covered with bands with sculptures out of finely carved stone. The walls are covered with carved low-reliefs which illustrate Hindu mythology, mainly scenes relating to the Vishnu god, to whom it temple was dedicated. The " mass low-relief is moreover high-quality and magnificiently carried out with Angkor”. All mountains of the temple d' Angkor were filled with images in three dimensions and each inch of the walls is covered by sculptures. At the beginning of l' AD1200, Angkor and of l' worsen Khmer started to decline. When Jayavarman VII dies, l' worsen of Thailand with l' west emerged like a major power in the area. The capital inhabitant of Thailand, was moved in Ayudhya, close d' Angkor, and obviously threatened the kingdom of Kampuchea. In AD1389 the Thais attacked Angkor and the city fell to the hands from the Thais. The conquest of the 15th century, the Khmer kingdom by the Inhabitant of Thailand resulted (1431) in l' final abandonment d' Angkor. The city was deserted and the capital was moved towards l' is jusqu' with the area of l' current capital Phnom Penh. Miraculeusement, very little damage was carried out in the area d' Angkor following the bloody civil one which terrorized the country during more than 30 years. Khmer Rouges, an organization d' extreme-left actively organized activities of guerrilla against the government of prince Sihanouk. In 1975, several buddhist monks who lived in the temples d' Angkor were massacred with the majority of the Buddhist population after d' a social reorganization”. However, Angkor Wat underwent very little structural damage in this attack. Aujourd' today, the archaeologists of everywhere in the world are actively implied in the process of restoration of the temples. Most of l' history of the “lost city” d' Angkor is always a mystery, but d' Angkor entered the “Coke Cola” and “Kodak” age, and that Kampuchea is developed more and more, l' mystical environment with Angkor will disappear.
